Too Long, Didn’t Read
If you want the easiest beach from the old town, go to Bačvice. If you want more space, go to Žnjan. If you want shade, rocks, and a more local feeling, go to Marjan.
For families, start with Žnjan, Firule, or Ovčice. For a scenic swim, choose Kašjuni, Bene, Jadran, or the small Marjan beaches below the pine trees.
Best beaches in Split
Split is not only a city-break destination. You can walk from Roman streets to the sea in minutes, and the beach style changes quickly depending on which side of the city you choose.
Some beaches are easy and busy, some are better for families, and some are more like small swimming spots than classic beaches. This guide focuses on beaches inside Split or very close to the center, so you do not need a full day trip to swim.
1. Bačvice
Beach type: sandy, central, lively
Best for: first-time visitors, quick swims, shallow water, people watching
Bačvice is the classic Split beach. It is close to the ferry port, bus station, train station, and old town, so it is the easiest choice if you want to swim without planning transport.
The beach is shallow and sandy, which is rare for Split. This makes it convenient for children and for anyone who prefers walking into the sea instead of climbing over rocks. It is also the home of picigin, the local beach game played in shallow water.
The downside is simple: Bačvice gets busy. In July and August, come early in the morning or accept that this is more of a social city beach than a quiet escape.

2. Žnjan
Beach type: pebble, spacious, open, family-friendly
Best for: families, longer beach time, more space, east-side accommodation
Žnjan is one of the best choices when you want a practical beach day in Split. It is larger and more open than the central beaches, with more room to spread out.
The sea is clear, the beach is mostly pebble, and the area works well for families because it is less cramped than Bačvice. Bring water shoes if you are sensitive to pebbles.
Žnjan is especially useful if you are staying east of the old town, around Trstenik, Mertojak, Split 3, or nearby apartments. From the old town, you will usually use a local bus, taxi, or a longer walk.

3. Obojena svjetlost
Beach type: pebble and rocks, relaxed, local
Best for: sunset swims, Meje area, avoiding the busiest central beaches
Obojena svjetlost is on the south side of Marjan, near the Meje neighborhood. It feels more local and relaxed than Bačvice, but it is still close enough to reach without leaving the city.
The beach has pebbles, rocks, and clear water. It is a good option if you want a swim near Marjan without going all the way to Kašjuni or Bene.
It is not the best beach for very small children because the entry is less gentle than Bačvice or Firule. For adults, couples, and stronger swimmers, it is one of the better city options.

4. Kašjuni
Beach type: pebble, scenic, dramatic Marjan backdrop
Best for: views, clear water, half-day beach plans
Kašjuni is one of the most beautiful beaches in Split. It sits below Marjan hill, with a wide bay, clear water, and a more dramatic setting than the central city beaches.
The beach is mostly pebble, so water shoes can help. It is popular in summer, but the setting still feels more scenic and open than Bačvice.
Kašjuni is best when you want a proper beach stop, not just a quick swim. Go earlier in the day if you want a better spot, especially in high season.

5. Bene
Beach type: rocky, shaded, pine forest, recreation area
Best for: shade, families who like nature, Marjan walks, active days
Bene is at the western side of Marjan and feels different from the city beaches. It is surrounded by pine trees and works well if you want shade, walking paths, and a more natural setting.
This is not a perfect soft-sand beach. Expect rocks, concrete sunbathing areas, and sea entries that are more practical than beautiful. The reason to come is the combination of swimming, shade, and Marjan nature.
Bene is a good choice if you want to spend more time around Marjan instead of only lying on a towel.
6. Small Marjan Beaches Below the Pine Trees
Beach type: rocky coves, informal swimming spots, natural shade
Best for: quiet swims, exploring, couples, locals
Some of the best swims on Marjan are not famous named beaches. Walk along the sea side of Marjan hill, look for small paths going down through the pine trees, and you will find little rocky spots where people swim from flat rocks or tiny coves.
These places are not for everyone. There may be no facilities, no easy entry, and no perfect place for a large towel. But if you want a quieter Split swim, this is often better than following only the most popular beach names.
Wear shoes with grip, bring water, and do not climb down anywhere that feels unsafe. The reward is shade, clear water, and a more local Marjan experience.

7. Jadran Beach
Beach type: rocks, concrete platforms, old Split swimming-club atmosphere
Best for: quick swims near Sustipan and Meje
Jadran is close to Sustipan and the Meje side of Split. It is more of a swimming spot than a classic beach, with rocks and built areas for entering the sea.
This beach suits visitors who are comfortable swimming from rocks or platforms. It is not the first choice for small children or anyone looking for a soft beach.
The location is the main advantage. You can combine it with a walk around Sustipan, the west coast promenade, or the Meje neighborhood.

8. Ovčice
Beach type: small pebble city beach
Best for: families, central location, calmer option near Bačvice
Ovčice is just east of Bačvice and can be a better choice if you want to stay central but avoid the most famous sandy beach.
It is small, easy to reach, and practical for a short swim. The beach is pebbly, the water is usually clear, and the atmosphere is more low-key than Bačvice.
Because it is small, it can still fill up quickly in summer. It works best for a morning swim or a simple beach stop rather than a long, spacious beach day.

9. Firule
Beach type: sandy and shallow, neighborhood beach
Best for: children, easy sea entry, relaxed local swimming
Firule is one of the most family-friendly beaches in Split. The water is shallow, the entry is easy, and the beach has a calmer neighborhood feeling compared with Bačvice.
It is close enough to walk from Bačvice, so you can compare both and choose the one that feels better that day.
Firule is especially useful with children or if you want a gentle swim without dealing with rocky entries.

10. Trstenik
Beach type: pebble, organized city beach
Best for: east Split stays, clear water, more structured beach time
Trstenik sits between the central beaches and Žnjan. It is a good practical option if you are staying east of the old town or want something more organized than the smaller Marjan swimming spots.
The beach is pebbly, the water is clear, and the area works well for a normal beach afternoon. It is less iconic than Bačvice and less scenic than Kašjuni, but it is useful and comfortable.
Trstenik is a good backup when Bačvice feels too crowded and Žnjan feels farther than you want to go.

Which beach should you choose?
Choose Bačvice if you want the easiest central beach. Choose Žnjan if you want space. Choose Kašjuni if you want scenery. Choose Bene or the small Marjan beaches if shade and nature matter most.
For children, start with Firule, Ovčice, Bačvice, or Žnjan. For a quieter local swim, explore Obojena svjetlost, Jadran, or the small Marjan spots below the pine trees.
