If you arrive in Split before check-in or leave after check-out, look for luggage storage near the ferry port, main bus station, train station, Riva, or old town entrance.
This is most useful if you are waiting for a ferry, taking a day trip, going to the beach, or walking through Diocletian’s Palace. Do not carry large suitcases through the old town if you can avoid it, especially in summer.
Before leaving your bags anywhere, check opening hours, price, reviews, and whether the place gives you a receipt or luggage tag.
When luggage storage helps
Luggage storage is useful in Split when:
- your apartment check-in is later in the day
- your ferry leaves in the afternoon or evening
- your bus, train, or flight is much later than check-out
- you want to visit the old town without dragging bags over stone streets
- you want to go to Bačvice or another beach before leaving
- you are doing a short day trip from Split
Split is walkable, but it is not suitcase-friendly everywhere. The old town has stone paving, steps, narrow lanes, and busy pedestrian areas. In July and August, moving with luggage through the center can become annoying very quickly.
Best areas to look
Ferry port, bus station, and train station area
This is usually the most practical area if you are arriving or leaving by ferry, catamaran, bus, or train.
The ferry port, main bus station, and train station are all close together, just east of the old town. If you are continuing to Brač, Hvar, Šolta, Vis, Korčula, Dubrovnik, Zagreb, or the airport, this area keeps the day simple.
Use this area if:
- you have a ferry later the same day
- you are arriving by bus and cannot check in yet
- you are leaving Split by bus, train, or airport transfer
- you do not want to walk far with bags
Riva and old town edge
The Riva and old town edge are useful if you want to spend the day sightseeing before checking in or leaving.
This area works well for Diocletian’s Palace, Pjaca, Prokurative, Matejuška, Varoš, and Marjan. Try to choose storage near the edge of the pedestrian zone rather than deep inside the old town, because dragging luggage through crowded lanes is slow.
Use this area if:
- you are staying in or near the old town
- you want to walk around the palace
- you are meeting friends for lunch or coffee in the center
- you have only a few hours before check-in
Near your accommodation
If your apartment, hotel, or guesthouse is not central, ask them first. Many places will let you leave bags before check-in or after check-out, even if they do not advertise it.
This is usually the easiest option if you are returning to the same neighborhood later. It is less useful if you need to catch a ferry or bus from the port area.
Ask your accommodation first
Before paying for storage, message your accommodation and ask:
- Can we leave luggage before check-in?
- Can we leave luggage after check-out?
- Is there a safe place for bags?
- Until what time can we collect them?
- Is someone there all day?
Hotels are usually better for this than private apartments, but many apartment hosts in Split are flexible if the cleaning schedule allows it.
What to check before leaving luggage
Before handing over bags, check:
- opening hours and last pickup time
- price per bag or per hour
- whether oversized luggage costs more
- whether payment is cash only
- whether you get a receipt, tag, or booking confirmation
- recent reviews
- exact address and walking route
Take your passport, wallet, medication, laptop, camera, and important documents with you. Do not leave valuables in checked luggage unless you fully trust the storage setup.
If you are going to the beach
Do not take large luggage to Bačvice, Žnjan, Kašjuni, or Marjan beaches unless you have no other option. Beaches are not good places to watch suitcases, and you will enjoy the day less.
Store bags first, then take only a small beach bag with water, towel, sunscreen, phone, and wallet.
If you are going to the airport
If your flight is later in the day, store luggage near the old town or ferry-port area and return there before taking transport to Split Airport.
Leave enough time. Split Airport is west of the city, between Kaštela and Trogir, and traffic can be slow in summer. If you have many bags, use a taxi or transfer rather than trying to combine storage, walking, and public transport under time pressure.
Simple plan
For most visitors, the easiest plan is:
- Ask your accommodation first.
- If that does not work, look near the ferry port or old town edge.
- Check opening hours before leaving your bags.
- Keep valuables and documents with you.
- Return earlier than needed, especially before ferries, buses, or flights.
