Marjan Hill in Split

Reading time: about 2 minutes.

Too Long, Didn’t Read

Marjan Hill is the easiest nature escape in Split. You can walk there from the Riva, Varoš, Matejuška, or the old town and get sea views, pine shade, viewpoints, small churches, and swimming spots.

For a short visit, walk up to the Vidilica viewpoint. For a longer visit, continue deeper into Marjan toward Telegrin, Bene, Kašjuni, or the small swimming spots below the pine trees.

In summer, go early or late. Bring water.

Why visit Marjan?

Marjan is part viewpoint, part park, part local walking area. It is close enough to the center that you do not need a car or tour, but it feels calmer than the old town streets.

It is good for:

  • morning walks
  • sunset views
  • running
  • shade
  • swimming stops
  • easy nature without leaving Split

Short route: Vidilica viewpoint

The simplest Marjan walk is from the Riva or Varoš up to Vidilica.

This gives you one of the classic views over Split, the harbor, the old town, and surrounding mountains. It is the best option if you have limited time or do not want a long hike.

Expect stairs and uphill walking. It is short, but in summer heat it can feel harder than it looks.

Longer route: deeper into Marjan

If you have more time, continue along Marjan paths toward higher viewpoints, forest roads, churches, and the western side of the hill.

You can make the walk as long or short as you want. Some routes eventually connect toward Bene, Kašjuni, and the south-side swimming spots.

Do not rely only on guessing paths. Use a map, bring water, and remember that going down to small beaches means climbing back up.

Summer advice

Marjan is shaded in places, but it is still hot in summer.

Go early morning or late afternoon. Avoid a long midday walk in July and August unless you are used to heat.

Bring:

  • water
  • hat
  • sunscreen
  • comfortable shoes
  • charged phone

Combine Marjan with a swim

Marjan works well with beach time.

Good combinations:

  • Vidilica viewpoint plus coffee
  • Marjan walk plus Bene
  • Marjan walk plus Kašjuni
  • Marjan south-side paths plus small rocky swimming spots
