Split Carnival is a winter street event with costumes, music, a city parade, and a relaxed local atmosphere in the center of Split.

For visitors, it is best treated as a free city walk with a show happening around you. You do not need a tour or special ticket. Check the official program, go to the parade route, and leave extra time because streets can be crowded.

For the 2026 edition, Visit Split lists the main carnival parade on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, following the route from Croatian National Theatre Split through Marmontova street, the Riva, Prokurative square, and St. Nicholas Pier.

What is Split Carnival?

Split Carnival is the city’s carnival celebration before Lent. It usually includes costumes, music, parades, satirical moments, children’s programs, and gatherings around the old town and waterfront.

The event feels different from summer Split. It is more local, more casual, and less polished for tourists. That is exactly why it can be worth seeing if you are in Split in February.

Yes, if you enjoy local atmosphere more than formal sightseeing. It is not an event where you need to understand every joke or tradition to enjoy it.

Getting around

Walk if you are staying near the center. During the parade, streets around the route can be busy, and normal car access may not be convenient.

If you need to cross from one side of the center to another, use the waterfront and old-town edges carefully, and allow more time than usual.
