Sea Urchins, Jellyfish, and Beach Injuries in Split

Reading time: about 3 minutes.

Too Long, Didn’t Read

For minor beach problems in Split, stay calm, get out of the water, clean the area, and ask a pharmacy or doctor if symptoms continue.

For serious allergic reaction, breathing problems, chest pain, fainting, heavy bleeding, heat stroke, or severe pain, call 112 or ambulance 194.

Wear sea shoes on rocky beaches, drink water, use sun protection, and avoid touching sea animals.

Sea urchins

Sea urchins are common on rocky parts of the Adriatic coast. They usually sit on rocks or the seabed, and the injury happens when someone steps on them.

If you step on one:

  • get out of the water carefully
  • rinse the foot with clean water
  • remove only visible spines that come out easily
  • do not dig deeply into the skin
  • avoid walking long distances if it hurts
  • ask a pharmacy or doctor if spines are deep, pain continues, or the area looks infected

Sea shoes are the best prevention, especially on rocky beaches and around Marjan.

Jellyfish

If you think you were stung by a jellyfish:

  • get out of the water
  • do not rub the area
  • rinse with seawater, not fresh water
  • remove visible tentacles carefully without bare fingers
  • ask a pharmacy or doctor what to use locally

Call emergency help if there is trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, dizziness, chest pain, fainting, or a strong allergic reaction.

Cuts from rocks and glass

Small cuts are common on rocky beaches, piers, and sea entrances.

For a minor cut:

  • rinse the wound
  • remove visible sand or dirt
  • cover it if needed
  • keep it clean
  • avoid swimming again if it is open or bleeding

Get medical help for deep cuts, heavy bleeding, signs of infection, animal bites, or if you are unsure about tetanus protection.

Sunburn and dehydration

Split sun can be strong from late spring to early autumn, especially around midday.

Watch for:

  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • weakness
  • confusion
  • very hot skin
  • lack of sweating in extreme heat

Move to shade, drink water slowly, cool down, and avoid more sun. For confusion, fainting, severe weakness, or suspected heat stroke, call emergency help.

Beaches where sea shoes help

Sea shoes are useful on rocky and pebbly beaches, especially:

  • Kašjuni
  • Bene
  • Obojena svjetlost
  • Marjan small beaches
  • parts of Žnjan
  • rocky entries outside the main sandy areas

You usually do not need them as much at sandy Bačvice, but they can still help if you walk around rocks or concrete edges.

Pharmacy, doctor, or hospital?

For small cuts, mild sunburn, insect bites, and basic advice, a pharmacy may be enough.

For deep wounds, strong pain, infection signs, allergic reaction, serious dehydration, or worsening symptoms, get medical help.
