Full Moon Walk in Split

An evening walking idea for Split when the moon is full and the waterfront is at its best.

Full Moon Walk in Split

Reading time: about 5 minutes.

Too Long, Didn’t Read

For a full moon evening in Split, start with the Riva and choose either an easy waterfront walk toward Bačvice or a more scenic route toward Marjan.

Go before sunset if you want views, bring comfortable shoes, and check the wind. Calm weather makes this walk much better.

The simplest route is Riva - Matejuška - west coast - Sustipan. The more scenic route is Riva - Varoš - Vidilica viewpoint - Marjan edge.

Why do a full moon walk in Split?

Split is a good walking city at night when the weather is calm. The old town, Riva, harbor lights, sea, and Marjan viewpoints all work well for a slow evening route.

A full moon does not need a complicated plan. The best version is simple: start before sunset, watch the light change, and keep the walk close enough to the center that you can stop for dinner, coffee, or a drink afterward.

This is especially good if you want a relaxed evening that is not only restaurants and bars.

Best time to start

Start 30 to 60 minutes before sunset if you want the best atmosphere.

That gives you:

  • daylight for the first part of the walk
  • sunset colors if the sky is clear
  • time to reach a viewpoint or waterfront spot
  • city lights on the return
  • a better chance to notice the moon rising

If you start too late, keep the route simple and stay near the Riva, west coast, or Bačvice.

Easy route: Riva to Bačvice

Best for: simple walk, central route, no hills, easy return
Difficulty: easy
Good in: spring, summer, autumn, mild winter evenings

Start on the Riva and walk east toward the ferry port, then continue toward Bačvice.

This route is easy because it stays close to the center and avoids dark or steep paths. It works well if you want a short full moon walk before or after dinner.

Bačvice can feel very different at night than during the day. In summer it may still be lively; outside high season it can be quiet.

Scenic route: Riva to Sustipan

Best for: sea views, quieter promenade, sunset feeling
Difficulty: easy to moderate
Good in: calm weather

Start on the Riva, pass Matejuška, and continue along the west coast promenade toward Sustipan.

This route keeps you near the sea and gives you a good mix of old town lights, harbor views, and open water. Sustipan is a good turning point if you want a walk that feels special without becoming a hike.

Use normal city caution after dark. Stay on lit routes and avoid isolated spots if you are alone.

View route: Riva to Vidilica

Best for: city view, photos, Marjan atmosphere
Difficulty: uphill, moderate
Good in: clear weather, before sunset

If you want the best view, walk from the Riva through Varoš up toward Vidilica, the first Marjan viewpoint.

This is the route to choose if you want Split below you as the lights come on. It is not long, but it is uphill, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water in warmer months.

Do this route before it gets fully dark unless you know the area well. Afterward, return the same way or continue only if you are comfortable with the path and lighting.

Longer route: Marjan edge

Best for: walkers who want more than a city stroll
Difficulty: moderate
Good in: clear weather, earlier start

You can extend the Vidilica route deeper into Marjan, but this should be treated as a real evening walk, not a casual after-dinner stroll.

Only continue if:

  • you started early enough
  • the weather is calm
  • your phone has battery
  • you know where you are going
  • you have suitable shoes
  • you are not walking alone in isolated places

For most visitors, Vidilica is enough.

Weather and wind

Wind matters more than temperature.

If bura or strong wind is blowing, exposed waterfronts and viewpoints can feel cold and uncomfortable. In that case, keep the walk short and stay closer to the old town.

If the evening is calm, the west coast, Sustipan, and Marjan viewpoint routes are much more pleasant.

What to bring

Bring:

  • comfortable shoes
  • light jacket outside summer
  • water in warm months
  • charged phone
  • small amount of cash/card
  • simple route plan

Do not rely on beach sandals for the Vidilica or Marjan route.

Safety notes

Split is generally easy to walk around, but use normal night-walking judgment.

  • Stay on lit streets and main paths.
  • Avoid isolated rocky areas after dark.
  • Do not climb down to small Marjan beaches at night.
  • Keep valuables minimal.
  • If walking alone, choose the Riva, west coast, or Bačvice route.
  • Check the last bus or taxi/app options if you finish away from your accommodation.

Where to finish

Good places to finish:

  • Riva for coffee, drinks, or a simple central return
  • Bačvice if you want a beachside end
  • Matejuška or west coast for sea views
  • Varoš if you return from Vidilica
  • old town for dinner

The best finish is the one that keeps the evening easy. Do not force a long route if the weather changes.

Simple recommendation

If this is your first time in Split, choose:

Riva - Matejuška - west coast - Sustipan - Riva

It is scenic, central, flexible, and does not require hiking.

If you want the better viewpoint and do not mind uphill walking, choose:

Riva - Varoš - Vidilica - Riva

Start before sunset.
