Too Long, Didn’t Read
Split is a good city for vacation running because you can make short, scenic routes without leaving the center.
For the easiest run, use the Riva and continue toward Zvončac, Sustipan, Obojena svjetlost, Kašjuni, and Marjan. For a flatter beach-side run, go east around Trstenik and Žnjan.
In summer, run early in the morning or close to sunset. Midday heat can be serious, especially on open waterfront sections.
Best running areas in Split
Split is not a perfect grid city, so the best runs usually follow the sea, parks, and pedestrian areas rather than normal streets.
The best areas for visitors are:
- Riva and the old-town waterfront
- Zvončac and Sustipan
- Obojena svjetlost and Kašjuni
- Marjan forest roads and paths
- Trstenik and Žnjan beach area
Easy central run: Riva
The Riva is the simplest place to start if you are staying near the old town, ferry port, Bačvice, Varoš, or Marmontova.
It is flat, central, and easy to understand. The downside is that it gets busy, especially later in the morning, before dinner, and during events.
Use it for a short shakeout run, not for fast intervals.
Best for: short easy runs, first morning in Split, sea views, simple navigation.

Scenic west route: Riva to Zvončac and Sustipan
From the Riva, continue west toward Matejuška, then toward Zvončac and Sustipan. This gives you a more local waterfront feeling than staying only on the main promenade.
Sustipan is especially good for a short stop, stretching, or a quiet sea-view moment. It is not a big running loop by itself, but it works well as part of a longer route.
Best for: scenic running, relaxed pace, sea views, short-to-medium distance.
Longer west route: Obojena, Kašjuni, and Marjan
If you want a more serious run, continue from Zvončac toward Obojena svjetlost, Kašjuni, and the roads and paths around Marjan.
This is one of the best running directions in Split because it combines sea, shade, hills, and quieter stretches. You can keep it simple on the road or add Marjan climbs if you want more effort.
Expect some elevation. Marjan is beautiful, but it is not flat.
Best for: longer vacation runs, hill work, shade, coastal views, runners who want more than a short jog.

East beach route: Trstenik and Žnjan
For a flatter beach-side option, go toward Trstenik and Žnjan. This side is useful if you are staying east of the center or want more open seaside space.
Žnjan is now one of the better beach-side areas for a vacation run in Split. It works well for a simple out-and-back route, especially in the morning when the promenade is calmer.
Best for: flatter running, beach atmosphere, morning runs, visitors staying around Trstenik, Žnjan, Firule, or Bačvice.

Marjan as a running area
Marjan is the best choice if you want a run that feels less urban. It has forest roads, viewpoints, shade, climbs, and several ways to connect back toward the sea.
Do not expect one perfect marked tourist route. Treat Marjan as a flexible running area: start near Varoš, Vidilica, Zvončac, or the Marjan gates, then choose a loop based on your time and energy.
If you go down toward beaches, remember that you may need to climb back up.
Summer running advice
Summer running in Split is possible, but timing matters.
In July and August, avoid long runs in the middle of the day. Heat, sun reflection from stone, and open waterfront sections can make an easy route feel much harder.
Bring water or plan where you will stop. Morning is usually best. Sunset can be beautiful, but popular areas get busier.
If your route follows the sea, you can also bring swimwear in hand or in a small running pack. A short swim at Žnjan, Trstenik, Obojena svjetlost, Kašjuni, or one of the Marjan swimming spots can be the best part of the run.
Safety and practical tips
- Run early if you want fewer people.
- Slow down on stone, polished pavement, and wet surfaces.
- Watch for scooters, bicycles, dogs, and pedestrians.
- Use sunscreen in summer.
- Carry a phone.
- Bring water for Marjan or longer routes.
- Avoid isolated paths late at night.
- Do not run hard through crowded Riva sections.
